I was introduced to fishing at age four by my father and have great memories of catching panfish at Rice Lake where my family and I would spend weekends and summer holidays. In 2009, after an absence of about 30 years, I was re-introduced to the sport, again by my father, and have never looked back.
After spending the 2010 season recreational fishing for bass, walleye and panfish, I decided to up the challenge and joined two clubs in early 2011 – the Port Perry Bassmasters and the Downtown Bass Anglers of Durham.
The 2011 season was a huge learning curve and I was fortunate to have the encouragement of fellow club members who generously shared their knowledge of the sport with me.
Since that time, I have:
• participated in a number of tournaments
• worked at the various sporting/fishing shows in the off-season
• helped out at a number of children’s fishing events
• been a part of several charity tournaments and community events
• joined two more clubs: Bowmanville Creek Anglers Association and Durham Anglers Association
• been the lead in organizing the Port Perry Bassmaster’s Kids’ Fishing Day in 2012 and 2013
• created the Fishing 101 for Women seminars
As much as I enjoy being out on the water, my real passion is in getting new anglers involved in the sport, particularly women and children.
For more information on the seminars, visit my Facebook page: Fishing 101 for Women or e-mail me at yvonne@womeninfishing.ca
Although you’re unlikely to see me in the Bassmaster Classic, I am definitely proof that it’s never too late learn and get involved in this awesome addiction!
Take a kid fishing!
