Finally 30lbs of smallmouths!
Lake Simcoe ON
Nov. 28, 2011 6:24pm

Well it finally happened, we finally managed to catch a 5 bass limit of simcoe smallies weighing approx 30LBS!! Jeff Slute my tourny partner and I had set out all year to catch as we would cull it "a 30 sack" and on Saturday Nov26 that was a reality. After sitting on the sidelines for years, I would watch all these monster bags of smallmouths being brought in to the Basspro Open Tournament and think why the heck are we not doing that tournament? We do alot of Simcoe tournaments but for some reason we never did this one, and I still don't know why? This year was different we had decided that we are not going to do the event this year but we are going to learn as much as we can about the fishing this time of year. As last year my season was cut short with boat issues, I had lost a whole year of pre-fish so that was not sitting well with us. We have been logging as much time as possible out there this year learning techniques, depth, temp, movement and all involved to getting 5 bites! We both agreeded that as funny as it sounds we just wanted to catch 5 fish in a day and to be honest that was the first day that we actually caught over 5 fish since our first day out this fall. Just to show you how tough it has been for us, our first day we put in 11hours and only caught 1 fish! It was a big one mind you but that doesn't help. The days 44 degree water temps and 10-15km winds was a perfect combination for tube dragging and that was how all the fish were landed. There was no real "one" colour as we used a few natural colours and had luck with all. We were both using 7' Shimano crucial MH action with 3000 Shimano stradic MGs spooled with 15lb green PowerPro and a 10' leader of 8lb flouro. We would use a uni to uni knot and tie on a 3/8 oz tube and scent it as much as possible. All are fish came out of 35 ft of water on various spots on the lake. So with any luck we hope we have a bit of knowledge going forward to enter next years BassPro Open and hope we can come even remotely close to that weight! So be sure to Follow me to get more storys like this one.
