B.A.S.S. Bans the ALABAMA RIG!!
Birmingham AL
Jan. 18, 2012 1:08am

Just some breaking news from south of the boarder. BASS has now officially banned the Alabama Rig from the Bassmaster Classic and all Elite Tour events. Check out the full story:

http://www.bassmaster.com/news/bass-imposes-one-lure-rule-classic-and-elite-series

I've never fished the A-Rig myself but after seeing the impact of this bait in tournaments south of the boarder I can see why BASS made this decision. The ruling was voted on by the elite anglers, and they obviously feel it is the right thing to do. The A-Rig is illegal in some states and provinces due to the amount of hooks that are being used on the rig. Many tackle makers are now making state and province specific rigs (custom rigs with anywhere from 3-5 hooks depending on state/province laws and regulations) making them legal. There is however major moral issues with the bait. Some consider it cheating because you are throwing multiple lures on one line and some people have very legitimate concerns about the effect this will have on the fish and their populations. Apparently while fighting a fish, the fish can hook/gash its self on the other hooks and lures attached to the rig thus making it much harder for the fish to survive because it makes the them more susceptible to infection and disease.

What do you think?? Did BASS make the right decision?? Should the A-Rig be allowed on your deck during a competitive tournament??

Pete

I personally think BASS made an excellent decision and we should
follow and ban them here aswell.

I AGREE AS WELL.
FISHING HAS CHANGED TOO MUCH WITH TECHNOLOGY.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF INSTINCT AND KNOWLEDGE.
BEEN REPLACED BY FISH FINDERS AND ATTRACTING NOISE MACHINES LOL
TOURNEYS ARENT ABOUT SPORT ANYMORE ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY.
BUT I GLAD TO SEE B.A.S.S. PUT THIS RULING IN PLACE.

Once again beaten to the punch by Powell and I was logged on at
7:30am! outrageous....good to see this rig banned by B.A.S.S, not too
much worry of it being big here, MNR simply wont let this in. Call me
stupid but I'll keep hummin my spinnerbaits out there instead. Are
they still around? or have the spinnerbaits gone obsolete with all the
new colorful gimmicks on our shelves. What's next? only a matter of
time before they come out with the Georgia rig....32 hooks on a leader
all tied in series via snell knot, and containing an entire set of
banjo minnows.
peace out

Did B.A.S.S also ban the double fluke rig? ( two soft jerkbait on one
line)

I prefer the Idea of looking for 5 big bites. I would hate knowing
that I have guys competing against me and can win on one or two casts.
I hope they ban it up here for tourneys only! I still would like to
fish the bait for fun at some point!

David Chong Wrote:

They also banned the double fluke rig, the drop shot above a tube rig,
the front runner with a topwater etc. All presentations that have been
used for years in tournament.
As far as I'm concerned it's much ado about nothing, it's just another
tool.
As far as the MNR is concerned as long as they don't have more than 4
hooks they are legal. We've had 4 armed spreaders for ice fishing
forever and they are perfectly legal.
It's available to everyone so what's the big deal? I often joke about
them banning Senko type baits but do I use them? Absolutely! Do you
know how fish have hit the frying pan because of Senko-type baits?

Chris Watton Wrote:

I bet if I went through some of my grandfathers old tackle boxes I'd
find something similar, just looks like something a sly old guy would
use back in the day, except far less stingers. Brushing aside old
coiled up dead lines as I look....haha. I would throw the Alabama to
test it out, we don't need it in tourneys though.

Chris Chappell Wrote:

I also think think that B.A.S.S. made the right decision. I feel that
these and other rigs are unsportsmanlike and unethical. The fact that
they can lead to snagging and possession issues with the MNR rules
just makes it a no-brainer for me. We at Premier Tournament Series
have banned the use of such rigs in our tournaments.

I also think BASS made the right decision. Interestly enough FLW has
posted this on their facebook page....

FLW will stand by its ruling that the use of Alabama Rigs is permitted
in its 2012 tournaments so long as they conform to state regulations
governing the waters being fished

not sure about u chong but my senko dont have five hooks in it lol
i dont make the rules i just fallow them lol
On January 18,2012
David Chong Wrote:

Firstly everyone has to understand their reasoning for this rule
change. Nowhere does it mention unsportsmanlike or unethical. They are
only banning them in the Elites & the Classic because these anglers
should be held to a higher standard.
They're banning the Alabama Rig because they say there is no skill
involved in throwing it. How much skill is there involved in throwing
a Senko-type bait? Are there some angler who are really skilled at
throwing a Senko-type bait? Absolutely, just as there will be anglers
who would be better at throwing an Alabama Rig than others.
As for the other rigs lumped in with the A-Rig, how were they fine
before the A-Rig and now they're not?
I have no problem with a rule change if there is a valid reason for
it!

Point here is these things have been around for an eternity and NO ONE
GAVE A DAM!!!! until today.
This can turn into a one way slippery slope real fast ...A-Rigs
today...250HP motors on 20 ft boats tomorrow and as for technology
advancements...lets all go back to fiber glass rods, mono line, cheap
steel hooks, flashers only!!!...no GPS or Side Scan allowed
either...and the list could go on forever...and ever.
And as for the rig being here..it already is and it is legal...there
is no rule against them to follow, and they have used them in Simcoe
for probably over 50 years to ice fish with four hooks AND NO ONE GAVE
A DAM...
As for tournaments being about money...they certainly are...spending
it on fishing them not winning it.
In the words of Danny Dunn...Peace out!!!
Enjoy the evening

Be careful what you support and/or ask for...you may just get a little
more than you intended.

i dont really see what all the crazy hype is really. its a baits that
simulates a pod of bait and i have seen what it can do. i honestly
think it has a time and place as does the flippen jig. I think "bass"
had to move in one direction or the other on this one and banning the
other two or three bait rigs had to go with the a-rig. I think they
made a good call however i dont think the a-rig would win every
tournament. just my thoughts.

this rig has stirred up a nest for sure, and it's not even new. My
uncle has bags of spreaders from old ice hut days. And Chong is right,
my 2 year old daughter can toss a senko...in fact she will be come
July at the cottage. Crowley says it best with a time and a place.
Like fall on Simcoe..yikes. If it's allowed in tourneys here and I
lose to it, it's not because of cheating or skill but because I chose
to not use it. Also Big Jim has great point, what is next? I have a
17ft with a 115....although it's frustrating not getting to my fav
spots before Johnny Ranger, I could solve the issue by financing a
faster rig, rather than implement the "if I had a faster boat" excuse.
If the A-rig is legal in tourneys up here then we either learn the
technique of using it...or stick to other proven methods to beat it.

great to have this site to interact with such a wide band of talent
and knowledge, hope to see most of you throughout the summer months.

Chris, it's awesome to hear that your daughter is smashing them at 2
years of age! I've always have been a big proponent of a restricted
horsepower tournament series. We have had them here in the past and
they've been very successful. That would level out the playing field
somewhat as far as boat equipment was concerned! When I started
fishing tournaments I also was in a 17 1/2' Fisher with a 115HP on it,
so I do understand.
But as with the A-Rig they're all just tools it's where & how you use
them! Good luck this up-coming season, Chris!

I bought my rig at the age of 21 with the purpose of starting out at
the BM100 level, many snags and set backs have left me out of the

breakout year, not expecting big wins but a full season with no
excuses. I have two solid partners through NPS so if June would just
quit lollygagging, I'm tired of skipping tubes under tables in my
basement! And congrats Chong on the win at Rice last August, it was my
first CSFL event and my fault for not placing higher with two ****
plays.
