NBSFA Utopia Win
Lake Utopia NB
Aug. 10, 2012 11:02am

Reel Used: Shimano / Lew's
Rod Used: Shimano / Lew's
Line Used: PowerPro
Bait Used: soft plastics
My brother and I recently won the NBSFA event on Lake Utopia on July 28th. Many of the other anglers don't like this lake as it can be a tough bite. For some reason it seems to like us. In seven events fished, we've had the biggest bag four times, with a second place and a sixth place finish as well. There is a particular streatch of water that is a popular spot with many of the anglers. You have to go nose to nose with other competitors to get the fish, but it comes down to a patience game. The pickerel seem to have made their presence felt and two of the first three bites were big pickerel. Not how I like to start the day. We caught one small keeper early, before catching a limit along a weed bed. The bass appeared to be chasing a school of baitfish, likely white perch as we hooked a number of them that day. We were a little disheartened to see one of the other teams hook a 3.25 lb fish right beside us shortly after, but managed to catch a 3.55 lb lunker of our own a little while later. Topped of the day by culling two fish late in the day, but we already had the weight we needed by then. Only had about 8 keeper bites all day, but it was enough to give us lunker and 11.4 lbs to take the event by 2.4 lbs. All keeper fish were caught on soft plastics, mostly wacky rigged stick baits and a similar bait carolina rigged.
