After fishing the CBAF Joint out of Orillia on Saturday I was able to fish the Frostbite tournament on Simcoe the following day. Jake Thomas and I fished the CBAF event and planned to build off what happened the previous day in hopes of getting some bigger fish.
We were greeted to a calm morning which made the run to Simcoe from Orillia Beach a breeze. It took a few hours but sooner than later we located a bunch of quality fish in 12’. To say these fish were finicky would be an understatement. Multiple baits on a dropshot, tubes, football heads with an X-Zone Swammers, shakey heads, senkos – the typical finesse stuff…all got ignored right in front of us. We finally figured out that we would only get bit if we blind casted areas and stayed away from the fish. I was using Power Pro Super Slick 8 in high-vis yellow (with a fluoro lead) which really made it easy to see my line on long casts and allow for easy detection of fish picking up the bait. We likely only had 6-7 bites all day but all were good quality. We ended up with 24.58lbs for fourth place. A new personal best. Jake and I were very pleased with our finish considering how good the other anglers competing were.
Thanks to Mel and Simon Frost for putting the time in to run the Frostbite events. Their next one is September 3rd on Erie – hopefully a larger field will come out and fish.
