Sorry to all my NPS followers that I haven't been active in the last week but I was knee deep in preparing for our annual walleye tournament. It was a pleasure to Co Emcee and act as tournament director again this year. We continue to grow with our anglers and within the community of Sault Ste Marie. If you are looking to fish a professionally run walleye tournament that is available and affordable by all then come visit us next year. Dates for next year will be released soon so stay tuned. Below is an article I wrote for the NOWT site.
Consistency proved to be the winning recipe for the 2012 Kiwanis International Walleye Tournament. Jason Doyon and Rob Laframboise were able to produce a 10 fish limit during the weekend with over 20+ lbs of walleye each day to take home a $10,000 cheque and bragging rights. They had their share of problems on day 1 but were able to put that behind them to fill their livewell and totalled 44+ lbs over the 2 days. They also produced big fish of the day at 7.11 lbs to take home the Subway big fish prize of $1000. Jason and Rob mentioned that the bite was much different this year then last year. Due to the high water temperatures, most of the walleye in the St Marys River system have moved into the river rather then the lakes like last year.
Coming in 2nd place was Joe Giuliani and Norm Thorkilson. They made some radical changes on day 2 which proved to be a great decision as it vaulted them from 9th place after day 1. They produced the Pet Valu big fish of the day with a 6.15 lb walleye caught not too far from the main tent and stage. In Fact they didn't venture far from the starting area all day. They collected a $3000 for second and $1000 for the big fish. Norm and Joe are regulars on the NOWT and are pushing for the Angler of the Year bragging rights so these were much needed points. Rounding out the top 3 saw Frank Vana and Al Tourigny just fell short of second place but they also produced a great second day by catching their walleyes in the river as well.
Sault Ste Marie continues to put on a great event for anglers and families. Everything took place under the tent this year with a great dinner and band Saturday night. All weigh ins were under the tent on the main stage, many nice walleyes were on display for all to see. Sault Ste Marie locals showed up to see the live weigh ins and they were not disappointed with the quality of fish. Stay tuned for next years dates to be released shortly.
