Once again, the Canadian Law Enforcement Games were being hosted by the Ontario Provincial Police. With bass season only days old in the eastern Ontario region, Sydenham Lake was the choice location to host the bass tournament portion of the 2012 Games competitions on 28 June.
38 Anglers from a variety of law associated departments across eastern Ontario showed up early in anticipation of a great day of friendly competition in support of a variety of charities. We were greeted with warm temperatures and calm winds – the day was off to a great start. I was teamed up with my Petawawa buddy, Travis Surette – he was anxious to start after a 3 hour drive earlier in the morning to participate in the event.
Upon completion of registration, the anglers blasted off to various spots throughout the lake in hopes of catching the top weights at the end of the day. The lake has some great bass to target: either largemouth or smallmouth can win on this lake. As the 3:00 pm weigh in approached, a steady trail of boats was observed blasting down the lake to meet the deadline. Once at the dock, anticipation and chatter was at a high as the anglers all started asking each other “how did it go”?
The common theme heard from most anglers was that it was a tougher day than usual on Sydenham Lake. However, as usual, someone always figures it out and produces a quality sack of fish to weigh in. The team of Jeff Desloges and Shawn Bough came out on top, with great weight of 18.11 lbs of largemouth bass. Following up in 2nd place were Travis Surette and myself with a healthy bag of smallmouth weighing in at 16.51 lbs. 3rd place was secured by Lenny Devos and Kevin Weir, who weighed in a quality bag of largemouth topping out at 14.28 lbs. As a bonus, Travis and I won the big fish of the day award with a meaty smallmouth, tipping the scales at 4.60 lbs.
Travis and I mainly fished a weed bed in the main lake basin in between 12 and 25 feet of water. Our main technique was drop-shotting Bassmagnet Lures “Twitch’s” and the big fish came off a 5” Bassmagnet Lures Quiver Stik (wacky rigged). We were amazed at the thousands of bluegill around the weed shoal we were fishing – this may have been a prime source of feed for the bass in the area.
This event was deemed once again a success. With the outstanding donations we were given from the angling industry supporters, everyone was presented with prizes which were extremely well received by the anglers. In addition, funds were raised that will be distributed to a variety of charities at a later date.
