Well today my friend Craig asked if I wanted to go for some Smallmouth Bass instead of Walleye. You see the last couple of weeks we have been fishing a lake that is simular to a lake that we have a Walleye Tournament in two weeks time. I was in for a change of pace and since we haven't been out for Smallmouth Bass this year, I was in. Up here the Bass season does not close so most anglers practice catch and release.
With north winds at 20 kmph, we knew the bite would be tough and fishing the beds would be challenging to say the least. Throughout the day we threw in-line spinners by Mepps and Blue Fox, tubes in white/silver flake or green/red flake with 1/8 to 1/4 bullet sinkers without pegging the weight and spinnerbaits with a white/silver skirt. All produced great. Caught a bunch of 1 to 11/2 pounders with the average Smallmouth being 2 pounds. We did however manage to catch a couple in the range of 3 or 4 pounds but they were more elusive given the north winds we have being having the last couple of days.
Well I almost forgotten how hard these fish pull and after the day of fighting with them, I am glad we decided to change our pace for today. If you don't think our Northern Smallmouth Bass put up a fight, just check out Craigs rod after doing battle with one. |

Your lucky Dave our season is a few weeks away , hey Dave I have some
experience on the northern waters while moose hunting mainly I'm
around vermillion bay eagle lake area , I've done really well on the
northern smallmouth using the small ghost clackin minnow jerked
extremely aggressive ,it's also very effective on our bedding and post
spawn smallies down here. I also have custom made tubes I'n smoke
bodies , white tentacles , I'n 2 " very effective on early season
smallmouth. Great read thanks for making me jealous.

Dave, those early season smallies can really put up a fight. We are
both lucky that we can fish for them this time of year.
