A great pike day.
Gananoque ON
May. 8, 2012 12:11pm

I went out with the dude this Sunday to Gananoque for some opener Pike fishing.
It took us a little bit to find them but when we did the action was pretty steady.
We anchored in the channel between two islands that had some current going thru it. It went from about 2 feet where the islands were to 13 feet back between the one island and a shoal. we started deeper and slowly moved up into the shallows. We were throwing the Swim n jerk in 4 inch and 6 inch. The key was to work it really slow. Toss it and let it hit the bottom and then bring it back in a pull twitch twitch drop retrieve. It did not seem to have to return to the bottom to get a strike but the twitch twitch did seem to be important. I fan casted into the deeper area thru to the shallow. The majority of fish came from the shallower areas and the largest from about two feet deep. The water was only 7.5C on the surface so still pretty cold in the shallow areas. The 4 inch size seemed to be the favorite meal as I only got one Pike from the 6 inch. But the 6 is going to produce this year without fail as it did last year and the year before.
Turns out that The dude is a pretty good net man. I didnt even have to tell him what to do. I was quite impressed. He got to reel in every fish, I hooked them and he would reel them in. He loved it. And so did I. Can't wait to get out and get at them again this week.
