March Break - Tuna
Barbados West Indies /West Coast ON
Mar. 19, 2012 8:33pm

Went down with a local guide in Barbados last week. It was a cloudy day, 26 C and breezy. 18 ft wooden boat, locally built with a 40 hp Yamaha. The guide, who calls himself Shaun a.k.a Inferno Clarke, from http://www.fishbarbados.net/ caught live bait and had the center of the boat converted into a live well. There was hole in this section of the boat that he would flood when he needed fresh water, then bail out with a old plastic bucket when there was too much. We hooked the 4 inch live minnows thru the back and let out a bunch of line. We anchored 1 km out from the north west side of the Island and had 3 rods out and he had a hand line ready to cast if he saw a fish feeding on top. We also chummed the waters but not a lot as we didn't want to attract the sharks. Well, for the next 3 hrs we saw tuna jumping around us (100 ft or so away) chasing bait and it was quite incredible to watch them feeding on the surface. We were feeding them some live bait but they weren't hitting our baited hooks. 10 mins before we were going to wrap up we hooked in to 2 of these (see photo). One was an 8lb and another 15lb. The 8lb I brought it in on a hand line and the 15lb was a sweet fight. It took us 20 mins to bring it in as it was a good 100 yds out. It took 3 good runs as well. I didn`t want to loose the fish and I have serious respect for tuna as they are great fighters, they don't let up easy. Going back next year with the same guide, same technique. Oh ya, and they did taste good Ahi style. Enjoy!!
