First Open Water Fish

I headed out for my first open water trip of the season in hopes of catching a walleye or two for supper. I headed west with a buddy to fish the Connecticut River. It's still a bit early and the water is still high and fast, but it wasn't as much about catching fish as it was about getting out and scratching the itch. We were fortunate to find fish. We fished several different locations and confluences seemed to be the ticket. We were hoping to fish below a couple different dams, but the water is still too high to get close enough. We tried about a dozen different techniques, but only caught fish on lead head jigs tipped with frozen shiners. All of the fish we caught were in two different river confluences and most were caught within 10' of shore. It was a chilly start, but warmed up nicely. There were two of us fishing and we each brought home a decent fish to eat. I'm sure it's just me, but that first walleye of the season always seems to be the best tasting.
