Scattered Smallmouth

Fished the Northern New York Bassmasters team trail out of Ogdensburg, NY on the St. Lawrence RIver - 8/23/14. The wind was light and variable, with overcast skies the majority of the day. No rain...until weigh in time when it poured! The bite was strange. Started off fast and furious with our 5 keepers in the boat including a 5.03 lb smallmouth, which ended up our big fish for the day, within the first hour but the bite shut down and turned into a slow grind as quickly as it began. We spent most of our afternoon shifting to deeper water in the 30-40 ft range and slowly upgraded our other 4 keepers as the day progressed. By the end of the day we had almost 21 lbs of smallmouth but just couldn't get that one more big one we knew we were going to need. The fish were biting really softly. Most of the time you couldn't even tell they were on until you lifted your rod tip and it just felt ever so slightly spongy. The majority of our fish came off of XZone Slammers green pumpkin and a hand poured worm I pour myself similar to the profile of a crosstail. We snagged a few on spinnerbait in the 2-3 lb range that didn't help us. All in a all, a pretty decent day on the river with such a slow bite. Finished in 3rd place behind 1st place Flint & Flint with 21.98 lbs and 2nd place Backus & Streeter with 21.71 lbs. Also got a pretty decent goby. Smallies were coughing them up in the livewell all afternoon.
